Cardinal notes “changing understandings of gender,” says Church must discern how to change. At Leo XIV's meeting marking ten years of Amoris Laetitia on October 8, Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão delivered a speech on the challenges facing families in Asia. He is the President of the Conference of Bishops of India. Former Italian priest Luca Favarin, 54, has become a father. After 25 years as a priest in the Diocese of Padua, Favarin welcomed his son Zaccaria on September 28. “If necessary, I will have the courage to die for you, because I have seen the most beautiful thing: the birth of a child,” he wrote on facebook. Favarin became known for his work with illegal immigrants, prisoners and people on the margins, as well as his commitment to homosexual privileges. He also denied Catholic teaching on assisted dying. After conflicts with his diocese and suspension, he left the clerical state in 2023. FSSPX to Continue Lourdes Pilgrimage Despite Bishop’s Restrictions The Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X (SSPX) has announced that it will continue its annual pilgrimage to Lourdes. Following the episcopal consecrations on July 1 in Ecône, Bishop Jean-Marc Micas of Tarbes and Lourdes withdrew permission for the SSPX to celebrate public Masses, administer sacraments, or organize public prayers at Lourdes. In an August 22 statement, Fr. Gonzague Peignot, superior of the FSSPX in France, announced that the Fraternity intends to continue coming to Lourdes every year, “Our Lady does not deserve to be abandoned despite the obstacles,” he said. The FSSPX expressed 'sorrow and incomprehension', questioning the bishop's decision and pointing to the interreligious Christian-Muslim pilgrimage that was welcomed at the sanctuary in October 2025. Monsignor Rossetti Continues Deliverance Ministry Despite Removal as Exorcist Monsignor Stephen Rossetti, removed in June as an exorcist by Washington Cardinal Robert McElroy, is continuing his deliverance ministry. In an August 3 email to subscribers, Monsignor Rossetti said he remains a priest in good standing in his home Diocese of Syracuse, New York, and will continue his work through the St. Michael Center, which operates within the territory of the Washington archdiocese. On June 3, Cardinal McElroy removed Rossetti as an archdiocesan exorcist and ended all affiliation between the Archdiocese of Washington and Rossetti's St. Michael Center. Only 45% of US Bishops Say Homosexuality Disqualifies from Priesthood The University of Notre Dame's McGrath Institute for Church Life has published on July 17 a report containing twelve proposals for assessing candidates for the priesthood. Entitled, "Do You Know Them to Be Worthy?", the file was written by Father Thomas V. Berg and psychologist Timothy G. Lock. The report draws on research commissioned from the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) and a consultation held at Notre Dame in September 2025. The proposals concern psychological assessment, candidates with particular psychological or developmental conditions, and formation for chastity and celibacy. It addresses candidates with conditions including ADHD, obsessive-compulsive disorder and autism spectrum disorder. On homosexual attraction, the Notre Dame authors note that a pause in formation may "more often than not" lead to a decision not to advance a candidate toward ordination. Cardinal Bustillo Meets with Freemasons On August 7, around 100 Freemasons from different obediences gathered at the Col de Vergio in Corsica, France, nearly 1,500 metres above sea level, for a summer lunch.
