On 7 September, Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller addressed the “Tavola di Assisi 2026”: “Islam… is not ashamed of God, it is not ashamed of transcendence, but it proposes an anthropology and a revelation radically different from the Christian ones.” Invoking St Francis of Assisi’s encounter with Sultan al-Malik al-Kamil, Müller rejected the modern portrayal of Francis as a precursor of interreligious dialogue: “Francis did not go to Egypt to open a diplomatic salon and confirm the Sultan in his faith.” Instead, he went convinced that Jesus Christ is the only Savior. For Cardinal Müller, calling Muslims to conversion is “not an act of hostility… on the contrary, it is the highest act of charity.” He also warned that the Christian West is not “simply threatened by external forces, but is being worn down by an internal apostasy.”

The final programme for the annual Rome pilgrimage of the Traditional Roman Rite (23–25 October) has been announced. However, there is a notable change this year: the pilgrims will enter St Peter's Basilica at 1 p.m. to pray, but there will be no Mass. Instead, pilgrims will travel to the Basilica of St Mary Major, where Bishop Athanasius Schneider will celebrate Mass at 3 p.m. On Friday evening, Bishop Schneider will preside over Pontifical Vespers at the Pantheon. Unlike in previous years, no cardinal is scheduled to celebrate the principal liturgies. On Sunday, the traditional Feast of Christ the King, Masses will be held at San Giovanni Battista dei Fiorentini, Santissima Trinità dei Pellegrini and Sant’Anna al Laterano. On 6 September, the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X (FSSPX) was denied entry to the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi. The group had planned to conclude their annual pilgrimage with public prayer inside the basilica. Individual pilgrims were permitted to enter privately or in small groups. The group therefore remained outside and concluded their pilgrimage in the basilica square. Father Gabriele D’Avino, head of the FSSPX in Italy, drew a contrast between this decision and the interreligious gathering in Assisi on 27 October, for which representatives of different religions and Christian denominations are expected to attend the 40th anniversary of the 1986 World Day of Prayer for Peace.

Renzo Pegoraro, Leo XIV-appointed President of the Pontifical Academy for Life, has doubled down on his mad position on assisted suicide. Monsignor Stephen Rossetti, removed in June as an exorcist by Washington Cardinal Robert McElroy, is continuing his deliverance ministry. In an August 3 email to subscribers, Monsignor Rossetti said he remains a priest in good standing in his home Diocese of Syracuse, New York, and will continue his work through the St. Michael Center, which operates within the territory of the Washington archdiocese. On June 3, Cardinal McElroy removed Rossetti as an archdiocesan exorcist and ended all affiliation between the Archdiocese of Washington and Rossetti's St. Michael Center. The University of Notre Dame's McGrath Institute for Church Life has published on July 17 a report containing twelve proposals for assessing candidates for the priesthood. Entitled, "Do You Know Them to Be Worthy?", the file was written by Father Thomas V. Berg and psychologist Timothy G. Lock. The report draws on research commissioned from the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) and a consultation held at Notre Dame in September 2025. The proposals concern psychological assessment, candidates with particular psychological or developmental conditions, and formation for chastity and celibacy. It addresses candidates with conditions including ADHD, obsessive-compulsive disorder and autism spectrum disorder. On homosexual attraction, the Notre Dame authors note that a pause in formation may "more often than not" lead to a decision not to advance a candidate toward ordination. Two pastors in South Korea have been fined 1 million won (about €620) each after loudly preaching on a domestic flight from Jeju to Seoul. They shouted that passengers would “go to hell” if they did not believe in Jesus, while one moved around the cabin. They continued despite instructions from the cabin crew to stop. A Seoul court found that their conduct constituted a disturbance under South Korea’s Aviation Security Act.
The court said the 64-year-old pastor stood in the aisle despite repeated attempts by crew members to stop him and shouted at passengers, “You will go to hell if you don’t believe in Jesus.”
